Intramuros (the walled city, founded 1571) is Manila's historic core. Fort Santiago (admission 75 PHP) and Manila Cathedral (free entry) are the two major landmarks. A calesa (horse-drawn carriage) ride (30-min tour: 200-300 PHP for 2 people) is the classic way to explore the cobbled streets. Allow 3-4 hours.

Rizal Park (Luneta) — Manila's Memorial Heart

Rizal Park (58 ha, free entry) is Manila's national park and the execution site of national hero José Rizal in 1896. The changing of the guard at Rizal Monument happens on Sundays. The park borders Manila Bay with a celebrated sunset. Chinese gardens, Japanese gardens and a planetarium are within the grounds.

Manila's national museum complex (Padre Burgos Avenue, free entry since 2020) comprises three buildings: Fine Arts Museum (Juan Luna's Spoliarium), Anthropology Museum and Natural History Museum. Allow at least 2-3 hours. Closed Mondays. 5 minutes' walk from Rizal Park.

Sunset over Manila Bay is one of Southeast Asia's most celebrated. Roxas Boulevard running along the bay is the classic spot — arrive 30 minutes before sunset (around 5:45-6:15pm depending on the season). Jeepneys (former American military vehicles repurposed as public transport) are Manila's icon. Fixed fare: 13 PHP for the first 4 km, then 1.80 PHP/additional km.
